A slot is a folder pinned to one of the numbered buttons on the left side of the bar. There can be up to seven, and switching between them swaps every chip on the bar at once — it’s the fastest way to move between, say, a Work set of bookmarks and a Design set without touching Chrome’s own bookmark manager.
Fill the slots
Go to Settings → Folders and drag any folder card onto a numbered button — or click a folder card, then click the button you want it on. Folders can be reordered by dragging, and each slot can carry its own icon so slots are recognizable at a glance without reading labels.
Three ways to switch
- Click the numbered button.
- Keyboard:
Alt+1,Alt+2,Alt+3switch to slots 1 through 3 by default (see every keyboard shortcut for the rest). - Let a rule do it: an auto-switch rule can pick the folder for you based on which site you’re on — a small star on the slot switcher means a rule is currently active. See Auto-switch by site.
What the active slot controls
Whichever slot is active is where Save page and Save all tabs land — see Save pages to the bar.
Good to know: which slot is active, and which folders are assigned to which button, are saved per device — they don't follow you to a second computer through Chrome sync. The folder itself, though, is a completely ordinary Chrome bookmark folder, so its contents sync normally.
